Makkah contains some of the most sacred historical sites in all of Islam — where the first revelation descended, where the Prophet ﷺ was born, where his family is buried, and where history lives in stone. This guide covers every major Makkah Ziyarat site with climb details, transport costs, best visiting times, and what to do at each site.
Makkah's major Ziyarat sites are spread across the city. Most are 3–8km from Masjid al-Haram and are accessed by taxi or organised Ziyarat tour. The most significant sites are Jabal al-Noor (Cave of Hira), Jabal Thawr (Cave of Thawr), and Jannat al-Mu'alla cemetery. The Hajj sites (Mina, Arafat, Muzdalifah) can also be visited during Umrah as a historical tour — they are deeply moving even outside Hajj season.

Jabal al-Noor (جَبَل النُّور — Mountain of Light) is where the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ received the first revelation of the Quran from Angel Jibreel (AS) — the event that changed the course of human history. The cave at the top, known as Ghar Hira, is where the Prophet ﷺ used to retreat for worship and reflection (Tahannuth) before receiving prophethood. The first words revealed were: اقْرَأْ بِاسْمِ رَبِّكَ الَّذِي خَلَقَ — "Read! In the name of your Lord who created." (96:1). Visiting this site is one of the most moving experiences of a pilgrim's Umrah journey.
The cave entrance is small — about 1.5m high, 2m wide, fits only a few people at a time. Make dua in the cave (or nearby if queue is long). Offer 2 Rakahs of Nafil (voluntary) prayer if space allows. Reflect on the moment the first revelation descended. Recite Surah al-Alaq (the first revealed surah). Maintain silence and focus — the cave can become crowded with pilgrims and loud at busy times — try to visit in the first hour after Fajr for a calmer experience.
The new Hira Cultural District at the base of Jabal al-Noor is a major Saudi heritage development. It includes: a museum with the history of the first revelation and early Islam, cafes and restaurants, rest areas, shops, and exhibitions on Prophet Muhammad's ﷺ life. For pilgrims unable to make the climb (elderly, unwell), the Cultural District is worthwhile on its own — providing deep historical context without the physical exertion of the summit climb.
Jabal Thawr (جَبَل ثَوْر) is the mountain where the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and his companion Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (RA) hid for three days during the Hijrah (migration from Makkah to Madinah). The Quraysh had put a price on the Prophet's ﷺ head and sent 100 camels as a reward for his capture. The Quran describes this moment in Surah al-Tawbah: إِذْ هُمَا فِي الْغَارِ إِذْ يَقُولُ لِصَاحِبِهِ لَا تَحْزَنْ إِنَّ اللَّهَ مَعَنَا — "When the two were in the cave, when he said to his companion, 'Do not grieve; indeed Allah is with us.'" (9:40). A spider web covered the entrance and a dove nested there — causing the pursuing Quraysh to believe no one was inside.
Jabal Thawr is located ~6km south of Masjid al-Haram. The climb is considered MORE challenging than Jabal al-Noor — the path is steeper, less maintained, and with fewer steps carved into the rock in many sections. The cave opening is at approximately 748 metres. Most pilgrims over 50, or those with any joint or cardiac conditions, are advised to view the mountain from the base and make dua without attempting the summit. The Jabal Thawr Cultural District at the base includes the Hijrah Exhibition — an excellent alternative.
Jannat al-Mu'alla (جَنَّة المُعَلَّى) is the main cemetery of Makkah, located approximately 600m north of Masjid al-Haram — within easy walking distance. It is the resting place of some of the most beloved people in Islamic history: Sayyidah Khadijah bint Khuwaylid (RA) — the Prophet's ﷺ first and most beloved wife; Abd Manaf — the Prophet's ﷺ great-grandfather; Sayyidah Aminah bint Wahb — the Prophet's ﷺ mother (debated location); and many other Sahabah and early Muslims who died in Makkah.

"Peace be upon you, O dwellers of these abodes, believers and Muslims. We shall, if Allah wills, join you. We ask Allah for well-being for us and for you." (Muslim)
After reciting the greetings of peace, send Fatiha for those buried, make any personal dua to Allah for the deceased and for yourself. Take a moment of quiet reflection at the graves of Sayyidah Khadijah (RA) — the first person to believe in the Prophet ﷺ.
Masjid-e-Aisha, also known as Masjid al-Taneem (مَسجد التَّنعيم), is the nearest Miqat point to Makkah — located approximately 7km north of Masjid al-Haram. It is the site where Sayyidah Aisha (RA) was sent by the Prophet ﷺ to enter Ihram for a separate Umrah during their Hajj journey. For pilgrims staying in Makkah who wish to perform a second Umrah, this is where they travel to enter Ihram before returning to Masjid al-Haram for Tawaf and Sa'i again. A taxi from the Haram costs SAR 15–25. The mosque itself is large and modern, with ample facilities.
Visiting the Hajj sites during Umrah is a deeply moving experience — seeing Arafat, Mina, and Muzdalifah outside of Hajj season gives pilgrims a profound preview of and connection to the Hajj rituals.
~5km east of Masjid al-Haram
Mina is where Hajj pilgrims stay in vast white tents during the 8th–13th of Dhul Hijjah. During Umrah season, Mina is quiet — the tent city stands empty, an awe-inspiring sight. Mina contains the Jamarat Bridge where pilgrims stone the three pillars (representing the devil's temptation of Ibrahim ﷺ). Visit for reflection on the Hajj rituals you hope to perform one day. Taxi from Haram: SAR 30–50.
~21km east of Masjid al-Haram
Jabal al-Rahmah is the hill in the Plain of Arafat where the Prophet ﷺ delivered his Final Sermon (Khutbat al-Wida'). The 9th of Dhul Hijjah (Yawm Arafah) — standing here — is the central pillar of Hajj. Visiting during Umrah gives an incredible sense of this moment. The white pillar on the hill marks the spot. A gentle climb (much easier than Jabal al-Noor). Hire a half-day taxi tour (SAR 100–150) to include Mina, Muzdalifah, and Arafat in one trip.
~14km east of Masjid al-Haram
Muzdalifah is the open valley between Arafat and Mina where Hajj pilgrims spend the night of 9th Dhul Hijjah under the stars, collect pebbles for the Jamarat stoning, and offer Fajr prayer in the open plain. The Prophet ﷺ combined Maghrib and Isha here. During Umrah visits, the plain is vast and peaceful — a place to make dua and picture the 2 million-strong Hajj gathering that fills this space every year.
~1km northeast of Masjid al-Haram
The mosque built at the site where a group of Jinn listened to the recitation of the Quran by the Prophet ﷺ and accepted Islam — as narrated in Surah al-Jinn (72:1). A small but historically significant mosque. Walking distance or a short taxi from most Haram-area hotels. Worth a brief visit and 2 Rakahs of prayer.
The approximate site of the Prophet Muhammad's ﷺ birth (approximately 570 CE) is located about 500m north of Masjid al-Haram, in the Suq al-Layl area. The original house has been converted into a public library (Maktabah Al Makkah Al Mukarramah / King Abdulaziz Public Library) to allow visitation without it becoming a site of worship. Pakistani pilgrims frequently walk to this location to stand at the place where the final Prophet ﷺ entered this world, offer salawat, and make dua. No entry inside the library is necessary — standing outside on the street and reciting salawat is the common practice. Walking distance from most Ibrahim Khalil Road hotels.
Yes — visiting Makkah's historical sites is permissible and widely practised. These visits are voluntary (Mustahabb), not obligatory. The purpose is reflection on Islamic history and the life of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, increasing Iman, and making dua. The key requirement is that prayers and dua must be directed to Allah alone.
Take a taxi from outside your hotel or from the Haram taxi stands. Show the driver "Jabal al-Noor" or "Ghar Hira" — most drivers know it. Cost: SAR 15–25 one way. Alternatively, your Moallim or Quba Travels ground partner can arrange a private Ziyarat tour vehicle that covers multiple sites in one trip.
The climb to Hira Cave involves 1,734 steps and takes 45 minutes to 1.5 hours for a healthy adult. It is moderate to strenuous — not suitable for elderly with joint/heart conditions, very young children, or anyone with respiratory problems. Avoid between 10 AM–4 PM in July (extreme heat). Best after Fajr.
Yes — many taxi drivers offer a combined Ziyarat tour covering both Jabal al-Noor and Jabal Thawr. However, both climbs in the same morning is very exhausting. If you want to climb Jabal al-Noor, consider viewing Jabal Thawr from the base and visiting the Hijrah Exhibition on the same day, saving the Jabal Thawr climb (if at all) for a separate morning.
