📌 Direct Answer: What are the absolute essentials for Umrah?

Your absolute must-haves are: (1) Original Passport (valid 6+ months); (2) Printed Umrah Visa; (3) Original CNIC; (4) ACWY Meningococcal Vaccine Card; (5) Ihram clothing (men: in carry-on); (6) Nusuk app installed; (7) Cash Riyals (SAR) for small expenses. Checked baggage must remain under airline limits (~30–46kg). Unscented toiletries are mandatory during Ihram. Zamzam water must be purchased at the airport only.

Ensure all physical documents are stored in a waterproof zip-lock folder inside your carry-on luggage. Take photos of all documents and save them offline on your smartphone.

Footwear Specifications & Stamina Walk Prep

During Umrah, you will walk an average of 10 to 15 kilometers daily between rituals and hotel transfers. Choosing correct footwear is critical:

Footwear Type Allowed in Ihram? Ideal Use Case Key Features & Buying Advice
🩴 Rubber Flip-Flops Yes (Ankle exposed) Hotel use, bathroom, and quick wudu runs. Non-slip sole is mandatory. Avoid walking long ritual distances in thin rubber slippers as they offer no arch support.
👟 Cushioned Walking Shoes No (Stitched & ankle covered) Ziyarah tours and non-Ihram daily walks. Breathable mesh fabric, lace-free design. Choose shoes 1 size larger to accommodate natural foot swelling.
👡 Orthopedic Leather Sandals Yes (If ankle/mid-foot is free) Perform Tawaf and Sa'i. Must feature thick arch support. Ensure buckles are securely stitched. Break in the sandals 2 weeks before leaving Lahore.

Barber Safety & Halq (Hair Shaving) Protocols

After completing Sa'i, male pilgrims must shave their head (Halq) or trim their hair (Taqsir). Follow these strict health rules to avoid blood-borne infections:

  • Use Licensed Barber Shops: Only use official barber shops located under the Clock Tower or near Marwa gate exits. Never use street barbers who operate on pavements.
  • Insist on New Disposable Blades: Ensure the barber opens a fresh, single-use blade packet in front of you. Never allow the reuse of blades.
  • Sanitization: Confirm the barber uses fresh plastic sheets, clean combs, and sanitizing spray. The standard official price is SAR 10 to SAR 20.

9. Frequently Asked Questions

We strongly recommend buying Saudi Riyals (SAR) in cash before departing from Pakistan (e.g. from exchange companies in Lahore). Fares at Saudi airports are unfavorable, and small shops, street vendors, and taxis in Makkah and Madinah only accept cash Riyals. Carry approximately SAR 1,500–2,500 per person in cash. For larger hotel payments or shopping malls, Pakistani debit/credit cards (with international sessions activated) work fine.
Power banks are strictly prohibited in checked baggage by all airlines operating from Pakistan (PIA, Saudia, Emirates, etc.) due to lithium battery safety regulations. You must carry power banks in your hand luggage (carry-on). Most airlines restrict the capacity to a maximum of 20,000mAh (or 100Wh) per device. Ensure the capacity label printed on the power bank is clearly visible, otherwise airport security may confiscate it.
You cannot carry Zamzam water in your regular checked luggage or carry-on. You must purchase a factory-sealed, official 5-liter Zamzam water bottle at the departure airport in Saudi Arabia (e.g., Jeddah KAIA or Madinah airport) for approximately SAR 8.50. Airlines allow one 5-liter bottle per pilgrim as an additional piece of checked baggage free of charge. Your private Zamzam cannot be checked in.
Yes. While razor blades, scissors, and nail clippers are strictly banned in hand luggage (carry-on), you can pack them securely inside your checked baggage without any issue.
Women do not shave their heads. To exit the state of Ihram, women cut about a fingertip's length (approx. 1 inch) from the end of their hair. This is typically done in the privacy of their hotel room.
We strongly recommend buying your Ihram sheets in Lahore and packing at least one set in your carry-on luggage. If you land in Jeddah and are proceeding directly to Makkah, you must be in Ihram *before* the plane crosses the Miqat boundary. Buying it in Saudi Arabia is only convenient if you are visiting Madinah first.
Haram gates have public shoe racks, but due to high congestion, shoes frequently get lost or misplaced. We advise carrying a small drawstring shoe bag and keeping your shoes with you at all times during prayers.
Yes, major supermarkets (BinDawood), international hotel chains, and retail outlets accept Visa and Mastercard. However, small cafeterias, taxi drivers, and dates market stalls only accept cash Saudi Riyals.
We recommend carrying a physical, printed vaccination card as airport officials in Pakistan or immigration officers in Saudi Arabia sometimes request physical paper copies during random checks.
Airlines will not allow boarding without a valid physical passport. If you forget your passport, you must arrange for it to be brought immediately before baggage counters close (typically 60 minutes before flight departure). Digital visas can be reprinted at local airport business centers.
